Janine Kohler, D.O. is joined our practice June 4, 2024. She specializes in family medicine.
Dr. Kohler graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University. She then earned her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine where she was a member of the Sigma Sigma Phi medical school honors fraternity. She completed her Family Medicine Residency in the Lansing area and has been practicing there for over 20 years. She has a holistic approach to care with emphasis on prevention via health lifestyle.
Dr. Kohler likes outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, and paddleboarding. She and her husband are looking forward to living in northern Michigan where they plan to enjoy the outdoors with their dog as well as visits with their son who is in college.
Dr. Kohler is excited to practice in the Traverse City area and is currently accepting patient 12 and older.
I'm announcing my retirement effective 6/4/2025. This means I will be available to see everyone in my practice for one more annual physical before I close my practice.
Janine Kohler, DO has joined Grand Traverse Internal and Family Medicine as of 6/4/24 and she is open for new patients and for transfers from my practice. She'll have access to your records, and she is happy to accept you in transfer, see you for a specific concern, or even a "meet and greet" appointment. I encourage you to consider relocating your care to Dr Kohler, but the decision belongs to each of you. She's relocating from the Lansing area where she's been in family practice for several years.
June 2025 will close out 39 years of practicing outpatient internal medicine for me. It's time to move along, as new adventures await.
Thank you very much for the privilege of service and for all you have taught me over the years. If I don't see you over the next year I wish you well and hope to see you out in the community.

To all patients of Grand Traverse Internal and Family Medicine:
In recent years Grand Traverse Internal and Family Medicine has faced an unprecedented challenge of being inundated by an overwhelming volume of phone messages and web messages. The influx of communication has proven to be excessively time-consuming and takes away from direct patient care. This situation has reached an unsustainable threshold for the providers and staff. For years we have answered these messages free of charge, but the current volume of calls makes this practice unsustainable as well.
We fully understand that patients want timely guidance and reassurance. However, many messages left are truly non urgent and can wait for a scheduled office visit. Moving forward we ask that you judiciously use the patient portal and nurse message lines. For inquiries that necessitate medical decision making we will be requiring a telemedicine visit or an in-office appointment. This policy change will involve associated charges reflecting the time and expertise provided by the nurse/physician.
Sincerely,
Grand Traverse Internal and Family Medicine, P.C.
We are available 24/7.
If you have an urgent medical question while the clinic is closed, you can access our on-call physician by calling our main office phone number (231) 935-0850, and follow the prompts. The on call physician will call you back within 30 minutes.
Please call us first before going to the Urgent Care or Emergency Room. We may be able to address your needs.
